Ford Fusion: Transmission Cooling - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35 / Transmission Cooling - Overview. Description and Operation

Transmission Cooling - 1.5L EcoBoost

This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-coolant fluid cooler which is mounted on the left side of radiator. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve which is mounted on top of the transmission and a transmission fluid warmer mounted on top of the transmission. When the transmission fluid is below normal operating temperature, transmission fluid travels from the transmission to the warmer which uses warm engine coolant to warm the transmission fluid. The transmission fluid then travels to the thermal bypass valve and back to the transmission. When the transmission fluid is at or above normal operating temperature, the a valve located in the engine cooling circuit closes, stopping coolant flow to the transmission fluid warmer. The thermal bypass valve opens allowing transmission fluid to travel from the transmission through the cooler and back to the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the engine coolant.

Transmission Cooling - 2.0L EcoBoost

This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-air fluid cooler which is mounted in front of the A/C condenser. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve which is mounted to the radiator and a transmission fluid warmer mounted on top of the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the ambient air.

Transmission Cooling - 2.5L

This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-coolant fluid cooler which is mounted on the left side of radiator. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve which is mounted on top of the transmission. When the transmission fluid is below normal operating temperature, transmission fluid travels from the transmission to the thermal bypass valve and back to the transmission. When the transmission fluid is at or above normal operating temperature, the thermal bypass valve opens allowing transmission fluid to travel from the transmission through the cooler and back to the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the engine coolant.
